Fellowship. Character. Service.

What is Freemasonry?

A fraternity built around the practice of being a better neighbour, friend and member of the community.

Shared values,
put into practice

Freemasonry brings men together to develop their character through learning, friendship and service. Its teachings encourage honesty, kindness and responsibility in everyday life.

A Lodge is the local community of members. It offers opportunities for fellowship, education and participation in a tradition passed from one generation to the next.

Questions worth asking

An open conversation

What does a Mason learn?

Masonic education uses symbols and progressive degrees to encourage reflection on conduct and responsibilities.

What about religion and politics?

Members follow their own faith. Sectarian religious debate and partisan political discussion do not belong in Lodge.

How does membership fit with family and work?

Family, employment and personal responsibilities take priority. Ask the Lodge about the commitments involved before deciding whether membership is right for you.

Is Freemasonry a secret society?

Its aims and values are public. Certain traditions and methods of recognition remain private.

A living tradition

Freemasonry uses shared traditions to encourage reflection and responsibility. At Patterson Grey, that tradition connects with our own Lodge history.

Freemasonry and religion

Freemasonry is not a religion or a replacement for personal faith. Religious and party-political disputes have no place in Lodge meetings.

What Freemasonry is not

Membership is not a promise of business advantage or social status. It involves personal commitment, fellowship and service.
